Why this course? This is a vocational course in applied physics for anyone with a background in the physical sciences or engineering. You can choose classes relevant to your career interests from a wide range of topics including: high-power microwave technology laser-based particle acceleration and enabled applications physics and the life sciences materials and solid state physics photonics quantum optics and quantum information technology You‘ll put the knowledge gained in the taught classes to use on a research project. You can design the project to fit in with your interests and career plans. The course gives you the opportunity to explore and master a wide range of applied physics skills. It teaches you transferable, problem-solving and numeracy skills that are widely sought after across the commercial sector. You’ll study You’ll have two semesters of taught classes made up of compulsory and optional modules. This is followed by a three-month research project. Facilities This course is run by our Department of Physics. Why this course? The MSc in Forensic Science is the UK’s longest established forensic science course. It'll allow you to qualify as a court-going forensic scientist, as well as preparing you for many alternative careers that require problem-solving and analysis. You’ll graduate with relevant practical skills combined with analytical and investigative thinking. You’ll study: crime investigation and legal processes criminalistics (eg shoe marks) forensic chemistry (fires, explosives, glass, paint) toxicology and drugs of abuse (cannabis, heroin cocaine etc) forensic biology (body fluid analysis, blood pattern interpretation) trace evidence and fibre examination questioned documents interpretation of evidence You’ll become an effective analyst, develop strong written and verbal communication skills and develop knowledge of: common separation techniques (thin layer, HPLC and gas chromatography) modern spectroscopic methods (infra-red, ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence) DNA profiling crime scene investigation Work placement MSc students will undertake a three-month work placement in an operational forensic organisation. Previous Strathclyde students have been placed in the Centre for Applied Science and Technology (CAST) and the Forensic Explosives Laboratory within the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), part of the Ministry of Defence. The eight-month Postgraduate Diploma course is similar to the MSc, but does not include the placement. Facilities Teaching takes place in the Centre for Forensic Science. It’s a modern purpose-built laboratory for practical forensic training, designed and equipped for ultra-clean working for the avoidance of cross contamination. Teaching staff Staff are experienced researchers in forensic science who are internationally recognised. The Centre for Forensic Science offers a unique learning experience, combining ‘case-based’ learning with research-led teaching. Accreditation The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences is a professional body with members in over 60 countries and is one of the oldest and largest forensic associations in the world. Its aim is to set high educational standards through the review and accreditation of courses that contain forensic science. MSc top-up programme The Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry also offers an MSc top-up for those who graduated with the Forensic Science Society Diploma after 2010. Entry requirements first or upper second-class Honours degree overseas equivalent in a relevant science subject such as chemistry, biology, biochemistry, pharmacy, zoology or botany students with relevant industry experience are also welcome to apply ideal for those who are marginally underqualified for entry to MSc course IELTS 6.5 is required for all non-English speakers entry is competitive and students are selected on the basis of academic ability and previous experience final selection decisions are made by the academic selector and successful applicants will be notified in the course of forensic examinations, there is a potential for exposure to body fluids from hepatitis sufferers and prospective students should consider hepatitis immunisation (this takes from four to six months to be effective) English language IELTS 6.5 is required for all non-English speakers Careers Most forensic scientists in the UK are employed by the police, government bodies such as Centre for Applied Science and Technology (CAST) and private companies who provide forensic science services to the police. Forensic scientists can specialise in specific areas such as fire investigation. Qualified doctors and dentists can also undergo further training to specialise in their field to become forensic medical examiners and forensic odontologists. Most of the work is laboratory-based but experienced forensic scientists may have to attend crime scenes and give evidence in court. [-]

Why this course? The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). It covers the creation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information in organisations and society at large. It encompasses both private and public sector libraries and information systems and services. This is along with related subjects such as management, publishing and the evaluation and use of information. The course is for graduates in any discipline who wish to pursue a career in the field of information or library services. You’ll study Diploma and MSc students follow the same instructional course for the first two semesters. If you meet the standard required to proceed to MSc, you’ll undertake a dissertation in the following three months. Compulsory classes These classes are as follows: Organisation of Knowledge Information Retrieval & Access Information Law Library Technology & Systems Managing Information Services Libraries, Information & Society Research Methods Dissertation This is an individual research project of up to 20,000 words on an approved topic. It allows you to pursue an area of specific interest, providing scope for original thought, research and presentation. Work placement There's an optional placement at the end of the second semester. The department helps to arrange this. MSc Quantitative Finance

The MSc in Quantitative Finance – an innovative cross-faculty alliance between the Strathclyde Business School and the Faculty of Science – has been developed to address this need. [+]

Why this course? Globally, financial tools, products and software are becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated. There's a demand for market-aware graduates who can demonstrate an understanding of mathematical models used in these products. The MSc in Quantitative Finance – an innovative cross-faculty alliance between the Strathclyde Business School and the Faculty of Science – has been developed to address this need. The course has been designed so that students who have a strong aptitude for mathematics, statistics and computing but who have not studied these topics in detail in their first degree can learn the necessary skills to move into the financial industry. This course will prepare you for a career in financial engineering and risk management. Careers include roles as a hedge fund manager or financial analyst. You’ll gain: a good understanding of financial theory and analysis an appreciation of financial markets a practical understanding of numerical methods in finance an introduction to programming for financial applications an understanding of the role of computers in business processes What you’ll study The curriculum provides a balance between finance and mathematical theory, computer implementations of this theory, and practical skills and knowledge. Core classes are undertaken in the first semester, and address themes such as principles of finance and quantitative methods for finance, as well as foundation classes in mathematics, statistics and computing science. Work placement You may be able to undertake an industrial based MSc project. This takes place in the third semester of the course between June and September. The placement can be based in the UK or in another country and are typically paid internships. In 2014 we had students placed in banks in France and Malta. Facilities The Department of Mathematics & Statistics has teaching rooms which provide you with access to modern teaching equipment and computing laboratories with all necessary software available. You'll also have access to a common room facility which gives you a modern and flexible area which can be used for individual and group study work and is also a relaxing social space. Entry requirements An Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, in accounting, economics, engineering, business studies or a subject area with a strong quantitative element. Applications are also welcome from those with appropriate professional qualifications, or those who can demonstrate relevant practical experience. Pre-Masters preparation course The Pre-Masters Programme is a preparation course for international students (non EU/UK) who do not meet the entry requirements for a Masters degree at University of Strathclyde. Careers Financial tools, products and software are becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated and there's a need for the finance industry to self-regulate as it witnesses unprecedented growth. Market-aware finance graduates, who understand the mathematical models used to develop these products and their computer implementations will be much in demand by international organisations. Drawing on expert academic input from three departments – Accounting & Finance, Mathematics & Statistics, and Computer & Information Sciences – this one-year programme has been developed to prepare participants for careers within areas such as financial engineering and risk management, and for highly quantitative roles, such as hedge fund managers and financial analysts. We also work closely with the University's Careers Service. They offer advice and guidance on career planning and looking for and applying for jobs.
