Our Roots: Royal Holloway College was opened by HM Queen Victoria in 1886. In 1900 both Royal Holloway and Bedford Colleges were admitted as Schools of the University of London. The year 1985 sees the merger of Bedford and Royal Holloway Colleges. In 1990 the Centre for Management was created under the Faculty of Social Studies. Thanks to our founding members, historians Charles Harvey and Bob Fitzerald, 1993 saw the Centre gain School status.
Single honours were offered from 1994, and by 2000 several masters programmes had been developed. Experience of teaching an in-house MBA globally for Flemings (later JP Morgan) helped the School win the contract to deliver the University of London's MBA by distance learning, which started in 2000. By 2005 both our on-campus and distance learning MBA courses were accredited by AMBA. In 2010-11 the School move under the umbrella of the new Faculty of Management and Economics, alongside two other faculties: the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science with each managed by a Dean.
Where we are now: Growing from strength to strength we now have over 85 academic staff covering the main areas of management, with over 1,000 undergraduates and some 400 postgraduates across our suite of Masters courses. In addition we have circa. 80 PhD students.

Our School has its own computer labs for PhD and masters students, plus state of the art technology (including video conferencing) in several lecture theatres within the Moore Complex. In addition, we are conveniently located next to the Computer Centre which is open 24/7.
The School of Management's £3 million Moore extension was officially opened on 26th October 2011 by Sir Alex Reed CBE, who is a long-time supporter of the College and the School of Management and the founding Patron of Royal Holloway Entrepreneurs. The event also celebrated the School's 21st anniversary.
The new extension provides high-quality, modern facilities for both staff and students. This includes eight dedicated seminar/break-out rooms, three innovative flexible work pods and the creation of a central feature atrium area providing flexible social and work space. Explicit use was made of sustainable features to maximise reduction of the building’s carbon footprint.
The Bedford Library has an extensive collection of books on management. The books range from the more traditional fields of finance and accounting, through to marketing and management information systems, both in relation to corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability.
The Library provides a range of electronic resources including Mintel Reports and Business Source Complete, a major collection of business journals as well as industry and country reports. Students also have access to financial databases such as Datastream and Mergent Online, which provide company and industry information.
World university rankings
Royal Holloway was ranked 102nd in the 2013-14 Times Higher Education World University Rankings published in September 2013. Ranked 12th overall in the UK, the Guide has described Royal Holloway as "truly world class."
Royal Holloway is ranked in fifth place in the world (first in the UK) in the category of 'International Outlook': recognising our broader outlook as a global university. The rankings use three separate indicators to judge 'international outlook' - proportion of international staff and students and research in terms of papers that are co-authored with at least one international partner.
The university is also particularly highly rated for the wide-reaching impact of its research, scoring 97.5 per cent for citations: further cementing Royal Holloway’s status as one of the world’s premier research institutions.
